When I was 16

Pierced an eyebrow,
wore Kikwear jeans,
loved WWE,
fainted on backstage line at Black Crows concert!

This post was written in response to this week's Saturday Centus prompt by Jenny Matlock.  The theme is when you were sixteen, and the post can't exceed 16 words!

The Thanksgiving Table

The children giggle, throwing silverware and bits of napkin at each other while little feet kick furiously under the cover of the tablecloth.

The dog pitifully yaps, begging to be let out of its crate to enjoy the meal he's smelled cooking all day long.

Aunts and uncles chatter loudly about the insignificant, refilling their wine glasses one too many times.

Grandma slumps forward in the high-backed chair, snoring gently while false teeth click together.

"Ahem!" knife clinking loudly against glass, "We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing..."

The meal has begun.

This post was written in response to this week's prompt from Jenny Matlock's Saturday Centus.  The prompt this week: "We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing".  Word count not to exceed 100 words plus the prompt.

The Old Cabin

I inhale the crisp, clean mountain air.  As I touch the peeling paint on the old porch railing, the rotted wood groans and breaks.

I take a sharp breath as I windmill my arms to regain balance.  Smelling the moist decay, I tenderly test each step until I reach the door.

Pushing it open, stale air whooshes in my face.  Mice skitter across the floor, disturbed by my presence.  Old cheese crackers gray with age are strewn across the kitchen.

The broken army trunk lays on its side next to the crumbling brick fireplace.

I love the possibilities.

This post was written in response to this week's prompt from Jenny Matlock's Saturday Centus.  The literary device to use this week is Sensory Details. THE PROMPT THIS WEEK IS:

The prompt photo reminded me of an old neglected house upstate that bordered our property.  On further investigation, I discovered it belonged to an old man who was dying of AIDS.  I called him because I loved his house.  We were in negotiations for me to buy it (I was 17 at the time and was going to use my college fund to pay for the property) when he died.  His daughter ended up selling the property to a group of 6 hunters who only come up a couple times a year.  I'm not a fan of hunting, and I still feel, 10 years later, that they stole my property.  I will find some way to own it one day.  That house calls to me.

Panic

My heart races, pounding so hard that it feels like it will explode out the front of my chest.

My breathing is getting shallower, faster, until I hyperventilate.

The tingling starts in the center of my cheeks, then spreads throughout my entire face.

Hands shaking, I attempt to punch the number in phone.  It takes 3 tries.

Tears silently stream down my face
.
I hit the send button.  Time stops.  I want this moment to be over.

"The number you have reached is no longer in service," the disembodied female voice informs me.

Relief floods through my veins as I press the end key, drained, and sink onto the bed.

I wrote this post in response to this week's prompt at Jenny Matlock's Saturday Centus.

A Little Overboard

"Hey!  Come-ere...gimme...another...another...one of these!"

"Are you seriously ordering another martini?"

"I'm not drunk!  I'm just a little...inebriated...I am, I swear."

"What is this?  Martini number 15?  You need to cool it."

"I'm fine, I'm just here to celebrate...you!  Your birthday."

"You're drunk.  Are you really ok?"

"I'm fine.  Thank you...oops!  giggle I just spilled the whole thing...lemme get another one."

"No, you're cut off.  Do you need help getting home?  Should I call you a cab?"

"I am good.  And I am not drunk!  And I am going home.  And I can drink more-I'm just okay because...because it's your birthday."

"Get home safe, thank you for coming to my party-you made it-interesting."

"You keep having fun.  Goodnight.  And I'm still not drunk."

This post was written in response to Jenny Matlock's Saturday Centus prompt.
